In 1841, his father married again. His new wife was Elizabeth Walker.
1851 - Mary was working for the Hughes family at Wood Hayes in Wednesfield as a general servant.
In 1856 Mary married William Stokes from Wyrley, Staffordshire. They married on 27th October 1856 at St Mary & Luke, Shareshill, Staffordshire.
The couples first child Mary was born on 16 September 1857. She was christened at St Martins in Tipton.
Their 2nd child was Elizabeth born around July 1860 in Cheslyn Hay.
In 1861, the family lived at Red Lane, Cheslyn Hay. Her husband, William, 26, was a coal miner. Daughters Mary Jane was 3 and Elizabeth was 9 months old.
Marys 3rd child, William was born in Cheslyn Hay in 1863 and was baptised at Great Wyrley on 29 March 1863.
Their 4th child Samuel was born in Spring 1865.
In 1871, the family continued to live at Red Lane, Cheslyn Hay. The ages and place of birth for Mary is a little out which is not unusual on the censuses but we are confident this is the correct census for
the family.
By 1881 the family had moved to Station Road, which is nowadays classed as part of Great Wyrley. Their two oldest daughters had moved out and their two sons, William, 18 and Samuel, 16 were both coal miners
alongside their father.
In 1891, the family continued to live at Station Road. Only their youngest son Samuel, 26, was still living at home and both he and his father William were still Coal Miners.
In 1901, all the children had moved out and Mary, now 66 amd her husband William still remained in the same area. The road is Station Street on the census, which runs into Station Road today so we are not
sure whether they had moved houses or whether the street name changed. William was still working as a banksman at the pit.
Marys husband died in 1906.
In 1911, Mary was visiting her youngest son, Samuel, who was now an Inspector for the National Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Children. They lived at 9, Monson Parade, Monson Avenue, Cheltenham. Samuel
had married and also living at the home was his wife Fanny from Cannock and his daughter Mary Lilian, 18, also born in Cannock.
We think this is a likely death record for Mary who died in Cannock in 1915.
