1912
We know from army enlistment records that around 1912 Edward worked at Plymouth Colliery, Troedyrhiw, (pictured below) as a Colliery Hewer.
On 4th November 1912 Edward, 19 years and 8 months, joined the army. He was assigned army no: 10948 and joined the South Wales Borderers. His address is listed as 21, High Street, Merthyr and he was given a character reference by Mr J Nicholls, a Grocer, from the Cash Stores in Merthyr.
On the enlistment papers Edward is described as 5 feet 3 and half inches tall, 124 lbs, with chest of 35 and 1/2 inches fully expanded, with a 2 1/2 inch range of expansion. HIs complexion is fresh with brown eyes and brown hair. It is also noted that he had several scars on his back. His religious demonination is Roman Catholic. He was declared fit for service at Brecon.
Edward was posted on 10th November 1912 but four days later was reported absent for 15 days,
returning to camp on 28th November for which he got 7 days detention from 12th December to 20th December.
A week after returning to duty , on the 26th December Edward
went AWOL again and this time was not apprehended until 2nd May 1913! He was sentanced to a further 28 days detention and forfeit of the time he'd already served. We are not sure exactly what Edward did after
that but on 17th May, a week into his 28 day detention, was discharged for misconduct, although it is stated that 'It is not thought this man has misconducted himself with a view to discharge', so we can
only summise that perhaps Edward may have lost his temper with someone or perhaps there was a personal grievance with a higher ranking soldier!
his time it seemed Edward adapted well to army life but unfortunately in April 1915, he was discharged on medical grounds having had several epileptic fits. It is stated that previously Edward had suffered with fits quite frequently and when they reoccured was diagnosed by an officer in the Medical Corps.
