1897
25th January 1897 – Marriage of William Shaw
& Mary Ellen Hartley at St Lukes Church, Cannock,
Staffordshire
1897-1901
We are not sure on the circumstances of the marriage/separation but Mary Ellen was living with a Thomas Brookes
as his ‘wife’ by 1901 in Catshill, Shire Oak,
Brownhills, (although they did not marry until 1938, after William’s death)
with a son, William, born in 1900.William is living back at home. In the 1911
census she is still living back in the Cannock area ,
in Abbey St, Green Heath, with Thomas Brookes as his ‘housekeeper’ but using
her married name Shaw with 4 children, William Thomas Shaw (b.1900), Thomas
Shaw (b.1904), Percy Shaw (b.1906) and Bertie Shaw (b.1909). We are not sure
whether William Thomas Shaws father was William Shaw or Thomas Brookes, but it
appears the couple separated before 1901.
